In our previous post, we covered some of the many Building Blocks of SaaS and how to manage their inherent risks. In today’s post, we dive into the five operational habits of successful SaaS delivery and some concrete ways you can seed these habits in your own organization. These operational habits have been gleaned from the top SaaS providers around the globe who we work with to navigate through the various dependencies that you and your customers rely on for good user experience.… Read More »

The Building Blocks of SaaS are Also Risks

No man is an island. And no SaaS application sits alone, independent of networks and services that have a hand in its delivery. It doesn’t matter how elastic, containerized, and NoSQL you are; how cloudy, software-defined, and chilled your data centers, if your CDN is slow, if your DNS is hijacked, if your ISP is dropping packets, your users will be impacted—and they’ll hold you accountable. You may not control external dependencies, like the Internet, but in the eyes of your users, performance is monolithic, not attributable to any one element or provider. If you’re challenged to identify the source of performance issues (“Is it the app or the network?” “Is it an upstream ISP?” etc.), think about your customers.… Read More »

Google Cloud NEXT ‘18: Rainbow Unicorns and Multi-Cloud

A few weeks ago at ThousandEyes Connect in Santa Clara, in addition to great speakers from Atlassian and Caesars, we had the pleasure of welcoming Joshua Cha from our partner Google Cloud present on their cloud vision and specifically Google Cloud Interconnect. So it was apropos that we, in turn, were able to give a talk at Google Cloud NEXT Partner Summit last week. My colleague Ameet Naik and I spoke at the Monday session, Cracking the Code: Building a Multi-cloud Network Strategy. … Read More »

One Resolver to Rule Them All: Ranking the Performance of Public DNS Providers

Our evaluation of public DNS services began in May 2015, when DNS expert Mehmet Akcin contributed a guest post comparing the performance of top public DNS providers based on latency measurements to each of their servers. We then reprised his work last year, which revealed similar results in overall rankings (Google’s led in both reports). But a lot has changed since last year. The big news, announced on April Fools’ Day of this year, was Cloudflare’s launch of its public DNS service, which it touts not only for its high performance, but also its security and privacy.… Read More »

When the Kill Shot is All of Us: Anatomy of a Fortnite Outage

A few months back, on March 18th, some users connecting to Fortnite: Battle Royale would have experienced first a total outage, then significant performance degradation, lasting over a course of about thirty minutes. The cause of the outage wasn’t due to an application issue, or even network performance. In this case it was caused by instability of advertised Internet routes — also known as BGP route flapping.… Read More »

APM + ThousandEyes: Better Together

Application Performance Management (APM) is an important part of many IT organizations’ portfolios because of the need for DevOps teams to gather user experience data to continuously improve application code. Yet, as SaaS-based applications and services rise (SaaS handles 11% of application workloads according to AlphaWise/Morgan Stanley Research), APM is meeting limitations in its ability to offer insight into digital experience.… Read More »

Comcast Fiber Outage Rips the Internet

Posted by on June 29th, 2018

Earlier today, beginning at 9:20am Pacific Time, Comcast suffered a network outage on its backbone that left millions of Internet users in the United States—even beyond their own subscriber base—unable to reach critical sites and services. The outage wasn’t contained to a particular region, as Internet users from Seattle to New York were affected. The significance of this outage was not only in its massive scope but also in its length, which stretched for nearly three hours—effectively an eternity in Internet timescale.… Read More »

Does SD-WAN Leave You Exposed?

Attending the Gartner CIO Conference in Toronto a few weeks back gave me the opportunity to talk to IT leaders about their top of mind concerns. A topic that repeatedly came up in conversations with enterprise attendees was SD-WAN adoption. The cost and manageability benefits are clearly compelling, and even though there’s always some trepidation around adopting any new technology, attendees were generally optimistic about the state of SD-WAN—with one exception.… Read More »

Monitoring Salesforce

Salesforce is a mature SaaS application, yet many organizations are still plagued with network and application performance issues due to the unpredictability of the Internet and the complexity of the Salesforce platform. Salesforce, unlike other SaaS applications, such as Office 365, is not an “out-of-the-box” application. It’s typically customized by developers to suit the needs of the enterprise, and often leverages third-party applications for business functions such as Marketing, Sales and Customer Support.… Read More »

Introducing Broadband ISP Cloud Agents

The delivery of every website and web application relies on a set of dependencies that include Internet providers, DNS and, increasingly, CDNs and other 3rd party services. Failure or degraded performance of any of these services can dramatically impact application delivery. Proactive, continuous monitoring of network and service dependencies is critical to ensuring users of a website or Internet-facing application have a high-quality digital experience.… Read More »
